My second TED Talk was Mark Bezos: A Life Lesson From a Volunteer Firefighter. This TED Talk was quite a change from my previous TED Talk.
Mark was telling a story about a fire that he was called to as a volunteer firefighter about a woman who had a very unfortunate event happen to her. It was the middle of the night she was outside, in her pajamas, with no shoes on, standing in front of her burning house. I suspect crying too... I can relate to this experience. When I was younger, my house caught fire. It was a very scary event because at the time, I was asleep. I woke up to my dad chopping at our wall upstairs-- mind you he was a fire chief of Winter Garden so he was experienced. Very traumatic experience. I was crying too.
Mark's talk was about how you need to start helping now not later on in life. He said in the middle of the talk "Don't wait until you make your first million to help somebody." This quote really spoke to me because I think it's important for people to help others before thinking about yourself all the time. I see this happen a lot with our generation, when people are walking down the street and you see a mom with say 3 kids and has her hands full. Most of our generation would just keep walking and not help her. I think it's important that people realize that the world doesn't revolve around them and they need to learn to help others.
When he was called to the burning house, (I referred to earlier), he had to get to the chief to get his assignment. Mark said that this is always a race to get here and at this point in time it was. One of his colleagues was in front of him trying to get his assignment. His colleague got to save her dog. Mark on the other hand, got to get her some shoes. So obviously the more favored one was the dog. At this moment, Mark realized that everything you do is important.
This TED Talk was really inspiring to me because I think its important to help others and do all you can to benefit yourself. And this also benefits your image. People will like you if you help others.
